Gary T. Pope Jr., an attorney concentrating in public finance and government law with Pope Flynn, a Columbia-based law firm, has been selected as a “Rising Star” in Government Law and is listed in the 2019 edition of South Carolina Super Lawyers®. “Rising Stars” listings are reserved for those attorneys under age 40 or who have been in practice for ten years or less. Super Lawyers receives peer nominations that are evaluated by independent third-party research across 12 key categories, including experience, transactions, representative clients, honors and awards, pro bono and community service, and bar and professional activity, among others. A Blue Ribbon Panel of peer attorneys listed in South Carolina Super Lawyers® then further evaluates the nominees, and selects 2.5% of attorneys for the “Rising Stars” list. Pope was also included in the 2018 “Rising Stars” list by Super Lawyers.
Pope has built a practice in the field of public finance, serving as bond counsel, disclosure counsel, and issuer’s counsel for public entities issuing municipal bonds. He regularly advises counties, cities, and special purpose districts, as well as the state agencies and public universities in connection with their debt offerings and public-private partnerships.
“We are very pleased with Gary’s early recognition by Super Lawyers,” said Joe Lucas, managing member of Pope Flynn. “Gary’s hard work, scrupulous attention to client service, and mind for the complexities of public finance and government law have led to his rapid rise at Pope Flynn and among our clients. He has carved out significant experience in higher education financing, serving as bond counsel in connection with over $1 billion of financing for academic, research, student housing, and athletic facilities. Just three years ago, Gary was named a member of Pope Flynn, and we have been thrilled with his successes.” In 2018 Pope was included in the 2018 Legal Elite of the Upstate listing by Greenville Business Magazine in Banking and Finance Law, as well as Government Law. He was included in the Midlands Legal Elite listing, Banking and Finance Law, by Columbia Business Monthly, in 2015 and 2016.
Pope, a graduate of Leadership Columbia, also serves on the executive committee of South Carolina’s John Belton O’Neall Inn of Court, “an association of lawyers, judges, and other legal professionals from all levels and backgrounds who share a passion for professional excellence.” The American Inns of Court has nearly 400 Inns of Court in 48 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Tokyo, along with more than 30,000 active members.
Pope received both his JD from the University of South Carolina School of Law and his International MBA from the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina in 2009. He received his BA in political science from The University of the South. Pope Flynn, founded in 2008 and concentrating in public finance and government law, has grown from three attorneys in Columbia SC to eleven attorneys, with additional offices in Charleston, Spartanburg, and Charlotte, NC.Back to All News
