Lawrence Flynn, public finance attorney with Pope Flynn, a Columbia-based law firm concentrating in public finance, government, and utilities law, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Columbia Parks and Recreation Foundation. Flynn was also recently selected to serve on the board’s executive committee. The mission of the 23-member board is “to promote programs for the City of Columbia Parks & Recreation Department related to enhancing and expanding the scope of the educational and human development qualities” and “to encourage, recruit, receive, and administer gifts, devises, and donations” for the department. Lawrence has been appointed to a three-year term.
“I spend a lot of time in the office and visiting clients as a public finance lawyer,” says Flynn, “but when I’m not on the road with clients, I try to spend much of my free time enjoying the great outdoors. Whether it’s fly fishing, canoeing, basketball, or hiking, I try to get out in Columbia and enjoy our city’s great parks and recreation facilities. Our recreation opportunities are a strong feature of our city, and it’s a privilege to be able to be a part of the stewardship of our recreational resources through the Parks and Recreation Foundation.”
In his law practice, Flynn represents cities, counties, water and sewer districts, fire districts, and other public entities. He serves on the Duke University Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee, on the Council of the Government Law Section of the South Carolina Bar, and in the volunteer mentor program for USC law students. Flynn graduated with a BA in history from Duke University, then went on to receive a JD from USC’s School of Law. He is a graduate of the 2012 class of Leadership Columbia.
